To avoid altitude sickness symptoms
- Breath deeply, slowly
- Drink plenty of water to replace fluids lost through heavier breathing in the thin, dry, cold air here
- Rest for 12 hours after arriving to Cusco
- Resting is better than sleeping because you don’t breathe as deeply when you sleep
- Do not exert yourselves at all after arriving to Cusco or Puno for 24 hours
- Drink the coca tea, chew coca leaves and or eat the coca candies throughout your stay in Cusco
- Eat lightly Day 1 in Cusco. Food digests much more slowly at this altitude. (NO eggs, cheese, meat, potatoes, creams on Day 1. Simple, clear vegetable soups are best)
- Do not smoke in Cusco or Puno
