Virgen de la Candelaria festival to gather nearly 40,000 dancers, musicians

Puno, Jan. 10.

Nearly 40,000 dancers and musicians will take part in several activities scheduled for the Virgen de la Candelaria festival which will take place from February 1 to 18 in Peru’s southeastern Puno region, the event organizers reported Tuesday.

The president of Puno’s Regional Federation of Folklore and Culture, Ronald Pastor, noted that the music groups participating in said celebrations began their preparation several months ago in order to earn the applause of the public.

Moreover, Pastor said the launching ceremony will take place on Sunday, January 15 at Puno’s Main Square at 18:00 hours (23:00 GMT).

Virgen de la Candelaria is the patron saint of the city of Puno, located 3,870 meters above sea level.

Said festival has given Puno the title of "Capital del Folklore Peruano" (Capital of Peruvian Folklore) and is considered one of the three most important religious festival in South America.
