Tambopata reserve, Peruvian Amazon’s most visited natural protected area in 2011

Lima, Jan. 11.

Tambopata National Reserve, located in Madre de Dios region, was the most visited natural protected area in Peru’s Amazon in 2011 with more than 29,000 visits of domestic and foreign tourists.

The National Service of Protected Natural Areas by the State (Senarp) mentioned that the figure represents an increase of over 15 percent from the 25,000 tourists in 2010.

Thus, Tambopata reserve exceeded growth expectations in terms of tourist influx, projected by the International Ecotourism Society which estimated an increase of 10 percent to 12 percent for nature tourism.

In addition, the reserve is among the top three natural areas that collected the most and, therefore, better income for their conservation.

According to Sernanp, 18.7 percent of visitors came from the United States, 10.5 percent from Great Britain and 62 percent from several countries. Only 8.8 percent were domestic tourists.
