Peruvian cuisine to be added to Unesco’s Intangible Heritage of Humanity list

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (Unesco) will inscribe Peruvian gastronomy on its List of Intangible Heritage of Humanity in November 2012, Peru´s Minister of Culture Susana Baca said.

Minister Baca noted that Unesco’s Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage will give its final verdict in said month on the formal request filed by Peru.

During a press conference where it was officially announced the inscription of the pilgrimage to the sanctuary of the Lord of Qoyllurit’i, in Cusco, on Unesco’s Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity list, Minister Baca presented the book “Cuisine and Identity: Peruvian cuisine as intangible cultural heritage.”

The book was edited by the Ministry of Culture based on the nomination file presented to Unesco in March.

In turn, Director of Registry and Study of Culture in Contemporary Peru Soledad Mujica noted that they are working on other cultural expressions so that these could also be recognized by Unesco in the future.
