Loreto seeks to attract tourists with culinary route

The Amazon region of Loreto, in north-eastern Peru, will launch next year a gastronomic route aimed at attracting a greater number of tourists interested in local food.

Norma Cordova, head of the regional office for foreign trade, tourism and handicrafts, explained that this project seeks to highlight the ingredients used in the preparation of Loreto´s signature dishes.

"Loreto is not only juanes or cecina con tacacho, we have variety and fusion. We aim to save the culinary arts of the communities, we will visit them to collect information," she told Andina.

Cordoba cited a number of dishes such as inchicapi (soup made with chicken, peanuts, corn flour), sarapatera (soup made with turtle and bellaco bananas) as well as salpicón de cecina and other dishes made with freshwater fish.

The route will also promote desserts prepared with aguaje (an exotic fruit rich in vitamin A) and camu camu (a low-growing shrub found throughout the Amazon rainforest), among others.

"The idea is to have a range of signature dishes to be included in the menus of all restaurants," she added.
