Canatur briefs IMF chief on proposal to create Ministry of Tourism

The head of Peru’s National Chamber of Tourism (Canatur), Carlos Canales, has informed International Monetary Fund (IMF) Managing Director Christine Lagarde about the current outlook of tourism in the country as well as his proposal to create a Ministry of Tourism.

Canales told the IMF chief that tourism is the third largest economic sector in Peru, generating 3.3 billion dollars in inbound tourism, where women play an important role in the sector.

“We contribute with 3.7 percent of the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) per year in spite of the financial crisis. For instance, some 80,000 French visit Peru every year,” Canales told Ms Legarde. Moreover, the head of Canatur highlighted that the growth of tourism in the country is due to the effort made by the private sector and small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs).

“There is no Ministry of Tourism, and despite this inconvenient, the sector keeps growing at a steady pace. There is a lot of work in tourism and handicrafts sectors, like 1.2 million job positions,” said Canales.
