Birdwatching tours add to Peru s Ruta Norte

The recent election of the Amazon Rainforest/River as one of the world´s seven natural wonders provides new opportunities for its tourism development, including bird-watching tours along "Ruta Norte," which includes several archaeological and natural attractions in the north of Peru.

Peruvian authorities said Monday that the recognition has given a significant boost to ambitious projects that would help add value and preserve the Amazonia.

The aim is to diversify options for bird-watchers and ecotourists, and at the same time, promote sustainable tourism as a source of income for local communities.

To that end, the regional government of San Martin, through its office for trade and tourism Dircetur, has signed an agreement with the Asociacion Ecosistemas Andinos (ECOAN) in the context of Destinos del Perú project.

This initiative is supported by the Swiss Cooperation (Seco), Peru´s Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism (Mincetur), Peru´s Export and Tourism Promotion Board (Promperu) and implemented by Swisscontact (Swiss Foundation for Development Cooperation technical).



With 1,804 species of birds, Peru is famous for its bird watching opportunities in the rainforest areas.
