Peru: Tourist arrivals from CAN countries up 142% in last decade

Lima, Jan. 19.

The number of tourists visiting Peru from other Andean Community (CAN) countries has increased 142 percent in the last decade, from 154,000 in 2002 to 373,000 in 2011.

The sub regional organization said Wednesday that the number of tourists visiting other countries within the Andean region grew from 606,000 to 1.3 million in the same period.

Meanwhile, tourist arrivals in CAN nations climbed steadily in the decade, rising from 2.58 million in 2002 to 6.18 million in 2011.

According to official figures, 18 percent of visitors came from Europe, 24 percent from the United States, 21 percent from Andean nations and 37 percent from others, including countries in South America, Central America and the Caribbean.

As for Peru, 17 percent came from Europe, 21 percent from the United States, 15 percent from fellow CAN countries and 4 percent from other nations.
