Chinchero is an original Inca town. The Spanish conquerors wanted to “civilize” and establish their culture in this beautiful place but never fully succeeded. Inhabitants live amongst almost untouched Inca constructions in the same place where their ancestors lived.
In the archaeological site of Chinchero gives visitors a better understanding of how vital this area was to agricultural production. Food store houses and a highly efficient irrigation system show the genius of this culture.
Legend says, with the arrival of the Spanish, Chinchero was burned in 1536 by Manco Inca in his escape to Vilcabamba in order not to leave anything to the Spanish.
