The so-called "alternative tourism" in Chile, which is an option to exploit natural resources for an unmet demand for the development of traditional tourism, is expanding.

This is how these new forms of tourism, including the so-called special interest tourism, rural tourism, adventure and ecotourism are an opportunity to areas or regions with a range of rural and natural resources. According to studies, this sector reported revenues of U.S. $ 19,500 million worldwide and is growing 30% annually. It is estimated that the market for special interest tourism mobilized around 60 million people in the world.

According to figures released by the World Organization of tourism (WTO), Chile is among the main tourist destinations in America, with a growth rate much higher than that recorded in the whole American continent (approximately 6%). The offer of the country in the field of natural areas is extremely interesting, because it is one of only five countries with extreme south latitude ecosystems, along with South Africa, New Zealand, Australia and Argentina. It has the planet's southern forests, fields, glaciers and fjords, the southernmost city in the world (Puerto Williams) and the most southern place on earth (Cape Horn).
